2027 HJ Rover Moot Registration

Please wait... page is loading...

Welcome to the 2027 Haarlem Jamborette contingent's offering for Rover Scouts - The Amazing Race Season 1! (absolutely no affiliation to the actual "The Amazing Race" show, and in no way sponsored or supported by CBS or "The Amazing Race")

Rovers and older Scouters from across Canada in teams of 3-4 will be racing across Europe, covering at least EIGHT different countries on their journey! Our adventure starts in the Netherlands in conjunction with the 2027 Haarlem Jamborette, but after a quick service project, you'll be given your first clue and then you're off on the adventure of a lifetime!

Due to the nature of the Amazing Race, we can’t provide exact route details (as it ruins all the fun), but pretty much every day will begin and end in a different country in Europe! Each day will feature Amazing Race themed challenges, and truly incredible sights and experiences. Winning is awesome, but really, the journey here will be life-changing regardless of how your team does in the actual race!

You can expect to be taken outside of your comfort zone and challenged mentally and physically. You can also expect to be completely blown away by the world you will be introduced to and the crazy adventures that await you!

If you'd rather skip all the reading, you can check out our Amazing Race kick-off video below:

Already convinced?? Go ahead and skip to the bottom to start your registration! Otherwise, read on!

What are the dates?

The dates for the 2027 Haarlem Jamborette are Saturday, July 24th (arrival day) to Wednesday, August 4th, 2027 (departure day). The Rover Moot will mirror the event dates for HJ. The actual race portion will end on Sunday, August 1st, which will leave Rovers a few days to explore the Netherlands at their leisure.

How do we register?

You are in the right spot! Just get through all this reading, and click the button at the bottom!

Who is eligible to attend?

This is an adult trip for adults, so participants must be the age of majority (legally an adult) by the date of their flight to Europe (18yrs in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan, and 19yrs in British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, and the Yukon). Unfortunately no exceptions can be made. All members must be active Scouts Canada members in good standing, but team members do NOT need to be from the same group or council.

What are the requirements for team size?

Teams will be 3 or 4 members, and can either be all Rovers 18-26, or all older Scouters 27yrs+. No mixed Rover/older Scouter teams will be permitted.

Can an individual Rover sign up?

The short answer is no… it’s important that all team members know each other very well before the adventure begins, so you will need to register as a team. Teams can be made up from different groups from any province. If you do not have a team, but would like to register, email us at haarlemjamborette@scouts.ca and we'll get you on our Discord server to try and find teammates!

This is a real competition, and there will be winners!

There are two separate competitions: traditional timed competition (like the Amazing Race show) and also a point-based competition. Most challenges will have varying difficulty levels with higher points awarded for higher difficulty. Teams can always choose to skip a challenge, but they will suffer a time penalty (like on the show), and also miss out on the available points. There will also be optional bonus challenges, so teams will need to decide if it’s worth sacrificing time to score the extra points. YES, it is possible for a team to win BOTH the time and points titles! That would be truly epic!

Keep fighting! You might be in the lead!!

The experience is specifically designed to make it extremely difficult for teams to tell what overall place they are in while on the race. You’ll have some idea, but there will be many teams that you won’t be directly traveling with, so you can only guess how you are doing in comparison to them. It means that even if you think you are in last, you might be at the top of the pack overall!

Sometimes, it comes down to luck!

The route is specifically designed to be completely balanced, so all teams will have the exact same opportunities and the exact same distance to travel. That said, sometimes luck rules the day! You could encounter a storm, a train delay, random strike, surprise construction, and so on. You could also really luck out and catch an earlier than expected train, or manage to get an Uber quicker than planned. Luck can be frustrating, but luck can also make the last placed team the winner.

It’s NOT all about physical strength and speed!

Just like the show, the best teams need to be well balanced and have members with a wide diversity of skills. Even if not a single member of your team would be considered an athlete, you can still win the Amazing Race! Physical speed won’t help if you can’t figure out the best train route to your destination! No one is running across Europe, lol!

This is an ADULT adventure for ADULTS!

Please keep that in mind when registering! There are always risks involved when traveling, and as traveling adults, we will be operating under the assumption that you can manage your own safety. YES, we will be there to help and we’ll have an awesome emergency response plan in place with safeguards, but at the end of the day, we are planning this adventure for adults, not youth. This is NOT a Venturer Camp! This is an opportunity for adults to explore Europe with other adults.

This will be a CHALLENGE!

Even if you skip the actual challenges, the travel schedule will be very demanding. Expect long travel days, high-stakes train-station dashes, and complicated mass-transit adventures. In Rovers, we “Go Beyond”, and the Amazing Race is designed to take you beyond what you thought you were capable of.

The race will be administered through Discord

All team members will be required to have a cell phone, a data plan in Europe and a Discord account in order to participate. Pictures will need to be submitted several times a day, and location services will need to be turned on so the pictures show your precise location.

Proof of sufficient spending money required

For safety reasons, participants will need to prove that they have sufficient spending money available for each leg of the trip, and those funds will need to be on a Visa, Mastercard, or a travel card (like the Wise Card – highly recommended!). Required spending money will be communicated in advance, so there will be no nasty surprises! Failure to verify your spending money availability each day will result in removal from the race.

Regular check-ins will be required

Teams will be required to check in several times a day by submitting specific pictures to their Discord channel. Location services on your phone must be turned on so the pictures will have your precise location encoded. Failure to check-in when required will result in removal from the race.

You may be forced to skip challenges

In planning the route we have built in a lot of time for delays and other Scouting mis-adventures, but for safety reasons, we need you to be able to reach your booked accommodations each night. With that in mind, if you check in too late, we may direct you to skip a challenge and proceed directly to the next overnight. This is not a suggestion; it is a required directive. Keep in mind, all the other teams will likely have the same thing happen to them at one point or another, so don’t be discouraged!

Don’t get disqualified!

Just like in the show, if you break the rules or any local laws, you will be removed from the race and forced to return to the Netherlands. There are no warnings or second chances.

Can you give up part way?

Yes, you can, but teams that are removed or who quit will be required to immediately return to the Netherlands by a route we will specify. Since you have signed up for a Scouts Canada adventure, you will not be permitted to leave part way and do your own thing. No refunds will be given to racers who quit early or are removed for breaking the rules.

What about the “service project”?

To fulfil the service component of our Rover Moot, our Amazing Race Rovers will serve as our Team Canada strike team for the set-up and tear-down at the 2027 Haarlem Jamborette. We’ll assist the Canadian groups, and all other groups on site that need help setting up tents, getting pioneering poles, and whatever we can do to help. After set-up, the race begins with teams hopping on a train directly from camp! Once the race is over, we’ll have a big celebration at a local Scout camp, hopefully spend a day at the Walibi World amusement park, and then finally return to the Haarlem Jamborette to help groups pack up their sites.

Fostering Friendships is still the priority!

The Haarlem Jamborette is all about friendship, so even though our Rover Moot is a real competition, we plan to do everything we possibly can to help you all make new friends from accross Canada that you can hopefully plan future Rover adventures with! Participants are encouraged to actively engage with the contingent through the 9 months leading up to the Haarlem Jamborette. We will have communications platforms set-up to allow everyone to get to know each other better and start making real connections. There will be regular meetings through Zoom as well. While there is no minimum attendance requirement, participants are expected to participate as much as possible.

While on the race there will be many opportunities as well to take in some "off-the-clock" downtime and connect with the other teams.

Iwan's Dream Fund

We want to do whatever it takes to help as many youth as possible experience the magic of the Haarlem Jamborette, so we have established an SCHJ No One Left Behind fund to help youth who need financial assistance. We have dedicated our fund in the memory of Scouter Iwan, from 1st Mt. Brydges in Ontario. Scouter Iwan's dream was to bring his group home to HJ, and unfortunately his life was tragically cut short, however his dream came true when his group rallied behind his memory and attended in 2023. We want to extend Iwan's dream to more and more youth from across Canada to ensure truly no youth is ever left behind. A small portion of your contingent fees will be directed to Iwan's Dream Fund, as well as the majority of proceeds from our contingent gear sales.

Applications for the fund are now open. You can find more details on our Discord server.

What does the Canadian Contingent fee include?

  • Nine months of support from the Contingent Team, and near monthly online meetings to develop skills, build confidence, and most importantly, foster friendships!
  • Access to a virtual jamboree environment to help Rovers and older Scouters make connections for reuniting at the Haarlem Jamborette
  • The Contingent Team takes care of most of your paperwork and manages all payments to Europe. You pay us in Canadian which is a lot easier to manage!
  • Overnight accomodations from July 24th - August 4th, 2027 (but not neccessarily a bed...)
  • All activity fees for the "Amazing Race" adventure
  • All required train reservation fees
  • Some meals, but not all
  • Transportation to and from the Amsterdam airport
  • Invitation to participate in optional contingent pre-trips in Europe, including an option to experience the "Tour of Honour" (visit Vimy Ridge, Juno Beach, Passchendaele, Beaumont-Hamel, and so much more!)
  • Awesome exclusive gear!
  • Access to funding through "Iwan's Dream Fund" for Rovers who need financial assistance to participate

What is NOT included? (everything not listed above)

  • Flight to and from Europe
  • Trip interuption, cancellation and medical insurance - which is required
  • Your InterRail (EURail) Pass. You will need at least a 7-day pass, but a 10-day pass is better as it will give you a lot more options on your free days! Passes frequently go on sale for 10-15% off => https://www.interrail.com/en-int/interrail-passes/global-pass
  • Spending money for most of your meals

The contingent fee should be a MAXIMUM of $1,100 Canadian. While we are VERY confident in our budget, please keep in mind the extreme volatility of the Canadian dollar, and the unpredictability of US tariffs on the global economy, not to mention various wars and so on.

We do NOT expect that price to increase, but if it turns out that the fee needs to increase, you will be given the option to cancel with a FULL REFUND instead of paying the increased price. We appreciate it's hard to pay a deposit with so many uncertainties involved, so we want to do our best to reassure you and provide as much security as we can.

We budgeted based on only two teams attending to make sure there is NO MINIMUM attendance! The race IS HAPPENING! If we get a much larger turn out, the price will likely decrease and more meals will be likely included.

Please keep in mind that 100% of the fees collected will go directly to your camp experience. If we collect a surplus in registration fees, we'll refund the surplus in FULL after camp (just like we did in 2019 and 2023).

What is the payment schedule?

To register for the SCHJ'27 Rover Moot, you need to pay a non-refundable deposit of $100/person which is due on registration. Your full team must register together, with one person acting as the team leader.

The next payment is $500/person due on Dec 15, 2026. The final payment of $500/person is due April 15, 2027. All payments are non-refundable.

Cancellation Policy

Unfortunately all of our booking fees are non-refundable, so unfortunately, we have to insist on the same policy. So all payments are non-refundable.

How do we pay?

Direct bank transfer or e-transfer is preferred, but we can also accept cheques or even credit card (4.5% service fee applies for credit card payments). We have a registered account in the name of "Scouts Canada - Haarlem Jamborette", and follow all Scouts Canada financial policies. Payment options and instructions will be attached to your invoice which you will receive after registering.
